Park51: Is it worth it?

So, Muslims bought a building that's been abandoned since 2001. Landing gear from the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center fell through its roof. This building is a few blocks from "Ground Zero" and a few blocks away from another mosque that's been in existence for 40 years. The plan is to convert this building, former home to a Burlington Coat Factory, into a community center similar to a YMCA. The plans include a musalah, designated prayer space.Impressed as I was by the scale of…See More

Your face as public space

At a red light I saw a man riding a motorcycle with a bandana around his face, only his eyes and forehead were visible. I was instantly alarmed by this veiled man. I was then forced to reevaluate what I was feeling. Why did I find him scary? He could have been protecting himself from flying insects for all I knew. So I had to break it down. In many cultures a woman wearing a face veil (niqab/burqa) is a sign of modesty. If your mother wore a face veil, you would probably associate a veiled…See More

Peace and Blessings

Greetings all,My name is Sultana. I first got involved with TE'A early last year when I was asked to share my story as a Muslim and as a "hijabi" (woman who wears a head scarf). I'm accustomed to being approached in public about why I cover by individuals who muster the courage to act on their curiosity. They are often apologetic, but I prefer a stranger stopping me in the supermarket than someone who has never met me assuming that "I hate their freedoms". That being said, I had all my answers…See More
